This Week is Animal Rights Week EAB UCSB

Becca Loux:

Did you ever stop to think that we are only one of millions of species of life on earth? Although modern science has yet to discover over 2 million, estimates range from 5 to 100 million co-inhabitant populations of this planet other than humans. With such a push for the struggle of gaining human rights, UCSB’s Environmental Education Board (EAB) asks the question: how do we obtain rights for the majority of earth’s inhabitants?

In order to continue the search for the answer to that question, EAB is hosting an animal rights week here on campus. Starting today, Monday, May 17th, and going through this Friday the 21st, animal rights week is packed with events. These events will take place on campus until the final day which will be a screening in Carpinteria. All the events are free, and offer free snacks as well.

A lecture about dog breeding and the truths about the commercial pet industry by a veterinarian, Dr. Paula Kislack, will begin the events tonight at 6:00 pm in IV theater 2.

Tomorrow night, in the same place at 8:30, will be a screening of the revealing, award-winning film by Joaquin Pheonix, Earthlings, which explores human exploitation of animals in many ways, and has been called “the definitive film Americans don’t want to see” because it is so uncomfortable yet true.

On Thursday, there will be a panel discussion called “Exploring the Human-Animal Bond” at 8:30 pm in Emarcadero Hall.

Lastly, on Friday, May 21, students have a chance to join EAB members in a trip to a screening of The Cove in Carpinteria at 5:30. This Oscar-winning film is about the journey of Ric O’Barry, who trained dolphins for the “Flipper” movies, attempting to right the wrongs he inflicted upon dolphins by investigating illegal dolphin hunting in Japan. For more information on this event, which includes also a silent auction and live music, email ucsbeap@gmail.com to RSVP.

Animal rights have been a controversial issue for decades, because of the general feeling that humans should come first in the pecking order, and that our rights should in no way be sacrificed or diminished for those of our animal neighbors. But if you are one of the growing numbers of people who are interested in preserving animal rights for the future of these species, or just want to expand your horizons and learn something new, participate in EAB’s Animal Rights Week this week.
