Drum roll please! And now, the moment UCSB has been waiting for since the beginning of spring quarter. It is now time to reveal the 2010 official UCSB Extravaganza line-up brought to you by Associated Students Program Board. Get ready because it’s about the wildest ride in the wilderness! (Sorry, couldn’t help but throw in a Big Thunder Mountain reference. I love that ride!)
Anyways, the 2010 line-up reads as follows:
Headliner: DRAKE
It is true. The rumors you heard are no longer rumors. It’s official! Drake will be headlining X’10. Drake is a fresh and popular artist in the hip-hop/ R&B genre. He has established himself to be a successful and talented artists by working with the likes of Kanye West, Eminem, Lil’ Wayne, and Timbaland. His hit singles, “Say Something,” “Best I Ever Had,” and “Forever,” have topped the Billboard charts and his iTunes sales are pretty impressive. Get ready because this Degrassi alumnus will rock the stage. Goodbye Jimmy, Hello Drake!
2nd Act: CHROMEO
Electro funk at its best! This Canadian duo will electrify the stage at Harder Stadium. Their debut album, She’s in Control was critically well received and the band was compared to 80’s groups like Hall and Oates, Klyaxx, and Sylvester. Their single “Needy Girl” became a hit in the rave and club culture. Their second album, Fancy Footwork, was also critically well received and generated positive reviews. Their current single “Night by Night” is already a hit sensation on YouTube. Be ready to kick-off your dancing shoes and dance the afternoon away to the suave and funky sounds of Chromeo.
3rd Act: EDWARD SHARPE AND THE MAGNETIC ZEROS
I am personally stoked on this act because they are truly amazing. I envy the people who saw them at Coachella because I heard nothing but positive things about their performance. This indie, alternative folk band knows how to rock the stage. Before forming Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, lead singer Alex Ebert led the power pop group Ima Robot. The Los Angeles natives have captured the music world with their folksy and happy single “Home.” Female vocalist Jade Castrinos also packs a powerful punch along with Alex to give Edward Sharpe a unique feel. Both Jade and Alex have been compared to the likes of June Carter and Johnny Cash. I would have to agree, and honestly, how badass is that because Johnny and June were one in a million.
4th Act: SUPER MASH BROS.
The Los Angeles mash up artists will be making the trek to Santa Barbara to provide quality sounds to the mix. Members Nick, Ethan, and Dick know where the party’s at, and at Harder Stadium, they will bring the fun. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, be sure to look them up on YouTube. Their sounds are one in a kind, and if you need a reference point, they are in the same style as Girltalk, which rocked Harder’s world last year at the 30th Extravaganza celebration. Songs to look into are “I Fucking Bleed Purple and Gold,” “Kisses & Thugs,” “Livin the Dream (I’m on a Boat),” and “Bruce Willis was dead the whole time.”
Opening Spot (5th Act): Soul Minded
The UCSB reggae favorite ensemble will open Extravaganza 2010 after winning ASPB’s 2010 Battle of the Bands. The students in attendance, along with three professional judges from the music industry, selected Soul Minded from four other quality acts. They bring the funk, and this will be a great opportunity for them to play along the likes of the other artists on the bill. Come support local talent and be sure to come early to Extravaganza to catch Soul Minded.
As you can see, Extravaganza will showcase multiple genres which are heavily popular at UCSB and Isla Vista respectively. There are a couple of things you should remember when you head out to X’10 on Saturday, May 15th. Be sure to bring CASH (no credit cards, but CASH) because we will be selling food and merchandise. In addition, ASPB will be selling Extravaganza t-shirts. We will advertise the price soon, but if you want a t-shirt to remember the festival, be sure to bring plenty of cash.
Also, bring ID. Last year, we did not have inflatable activities because it was at night, but because it is now in the daytime, we have brought the mechanical bull and human foosball events back to Harder. You have to be 18yrs or older to participate, so that is why I encourage you to bring your ID if you want to ride the bull. If you forget, we will have henna artists and the popular photo booth from last year that do not require ID.
Mark your calendars now! Saturday, May 15th at Harder is where you will want to be. Doors open at 1pm. Bring plenty of sunscreen, and be sure to bring your dancing shoes. It’s going to be one hell of an Extravaganza!
Ciao!
