UCSB Associated Students Scandal Coverage

Zak Weinberg:

Associated Students held their 2nd closed meeting this week, due to what Chris Wendle, Associated Students internal vice president deems an emergency situation. Emergency, to most students, might suggest their saftey or education is threatened. Apparently to Wendle, getting drunk, damaging property, and getting caught, is also an emergency situtation. AS is alledged to have damaged property at Villa Antonio, during a university funded retreat the weekend of January 9th in Los Osos California. Lance Heck, a representative from Morrocco Method International, the company that owns Villa Antonio, said not only did students damage property, but there was no chaparone present - a direct violation of the rental agreement. Heck also said University attorneys told him in an email to stop releasing documents regarding the matter. Some of these documents include pictures of alcohol on the premise. UC Representative Michael Young said the estimated damage is $970, while Heck claimed damage was estimated in the thousands.

Some students say AS is a poor reflection of our general student population. “AS should be responsible knowing they are in the public eye, representing the school,” said Kristen World, 4th year antropology and spanish double major. Also, with the recent fee increases, some students question why AS was staying in a Villa where rates for a room range from $750 dollars per night.
