Lady Gauchos Go Cold to Start 2nd Half, Fall to LBSU

With just under two minutes left in the 1st half, the UCSB women’s basketball team trailed by only two. By halftime, Long Beach State’s lead had grown to six. With just over twelve and a half minutes left in the second half, the lead had ballooned to 19. Long Beach State never looked back and, after withstanding a quick UCSB run, cruised to a 78-63 victory.

Long Beach State took control of the game in the first four minutes of the second frame. With the help of three long range jumpers and a handful of dribble drive layups, the Lady 49ers broke the game open with a 15-4 run. The Gauchos couldn’t find a consistent rhythm during the stretch; they settled for contested jumpers, threw crosscourt passes out of bounds and gave away possessions with shot clock violations. UCSB chipped away at the lead midway through the period, cutting the deficit to eight with just under eight minutes left, before Long Beach State put the contest out of reach for good.

With the loss, UCSB dropped to 5-11 and 2-2 in the conference. With Cal Poly’s overtime win over conference leader Cal State Fullerton, the Lady Gauchos fell from a tie for third to a tie for sixth in the Big West Conference.

UCSB now faces three straight conferences road games, at Riverside on Saturday, at Cal State Fullerton on the 23th, and at Cal Poly on the 28th. They return home against Northridge on the 30th.
