Shounak Dharap:
On Wednesday, Apple unveiled the long-awaited iPad. A mix between a MacBook and an iPhone, the iPad is Apple’s latest attempt to corner the market on…well, everything, and one-up its competitors in the process.
The iPad is 9.7 inches of LED- backlit pure Apple ingenuity. It features a multi-touch screen that allows for print, audio, video, and photo multimedia, along with internet capabilities and the ability to run iPhone apps. Along with Wi-Fi capabilities, the higher priced models also come with 3G plans.
The iPad is intended to revolutionize the computer industry in the same way the iPod took over music. The iPad is essentially what a netbook wishes it was. This digital notepad seeks to replace Amazon’s Kindle as the market’s premiere e-reader, and will take on-the-go media to a whole new level. On the low end, the 16 GB iPad (without 3G) will run you $499, while the 64 GB (without 3G) will cost $699.
Other features of the iPad include GPS, digital compass, iWork (Apple’s version of Microsoft Office), and an all-new iBookstore where users will be able do buy and download eBooks.
Perhaps the most important impact of the iPad will be in education, where cheap digital notepads could revolutionize the way schools are taught.
However, as with any first-generation Apple product, I recommend you hold out before rushing to buy one. Precedent shows that Apple is far too restricting when it comes to releasing technology, preferring to release multiple generations of devices – that bring little more to the table than accessorial upgrades – and substantially hiking their prices up. While the Apple iPad is a brilliant idea, wait until the second generation comes out before purchasing it.

oh, btw, netbooks are a fraction of the cost and do a lot more.
yes but the whole thing is that at this current point in time, technology isn’t advanced enough to make any sort of iPad or similar device stand out. it has POTENTIAL. and yes, other companies manufacture similar products. hell, other companies also manufacture mp3 players. but because of Apple’s large user base and reputation for easy to use GUI, the technology will have a chance to develop. it’s all about image, which Apple certainly has
