Lady Gauchos Take Westmont 63-54

Abel Berhanu:

The defending Big West champions took the court last night against nearby Westmont College in the regular season exhibition opener, setting the stage for the regular season with a 63-54 win. At times, the Lady Gauchos were a bit sloppy with the ball, making questionable passes against a Westmont squad that, at times, resembled a high school team. But the ultimate success formula hardly let the Gauchos down, and that was dumping the ball into the post to the 6-4 Mekia Valentine, a redshirt transfer from Wake Forest. While her stat line was impressive (28 points, 12 rebounds), point guard Emilie Johnson also had a stellar game, managing the game well with 15 points and 7 assists to go along with only 1 turnover. Johnson also knocked down 3 treys and was the only Gaucho to connect from downtown. UCSB crashed the boards effectively, outrebounding the undersized Westmont 48-33.

After a strong start, the Gauchos fell behind midway through the third quarter after Jessica Case spurred a strong run by Westmont from behind the 3-point line, where they were 6-of-11 in the second half. But UCSB turned to Valentine for the easy buckets in the post, where Westmont had difficulty matching her size and finishing ability around the hoop. The upcoming season seems to be promising for the Lady Gauchos, and if Valentine continues her strong play, another repeat of the Big West crown is all but inevitable.
