Ying Yang Twins and Paridiso Girls to End UCSB Welcome Back Rap Trend?

Ying Yang Twins and Paridiso Girls to End UCSB Welcome Back Rap Trend?

By Taylor Davis:

UCSB’s Welcome Back concerts have a way of drawing crowds of freshmen and returning students alike. Last night, when the Associated Students Program Board booked the Ying Yang Twins and the Paradiso Girls to ring in the new school year, Storke Plaza was overflowing with students eager to catch a glimpse of the worldly five-some and the famous rap duo.

The night began with a DJ playing some of the year’s most popular hits, while mixing in some jams from the beginning of the twenty-first century. The Paradiso Girls, a five-girl singing and dancing troupe from all over the world, opened the concert with their song “Unpredictable” a little after nine o’clock. They soon followed with their hit singles “Who’s my Bitch” and “Patron Tequila”, which features Lil Jon and Eve.

The girls, including Aria, Lauren, Shar Mae, Kelly, and Chelsea, were brought together from their respective countries: France, England, Philippines, Barbados, and the United States. They brought a club-like electronica sound, complete with sultry dance moves and skimpy outfits. After their five song run, which further included “That’s just what I like” and “DJ”, the girls exited the stage to take pictures with fans and make way for the dynamic duos act.

Around 9:45, chants for the Ying Yang Twins resonated in the crowd, which were soon answered with the twins singing behind the curtains backstage before presenting themselves to the audience. The brothers, Kaine and D-roc, took the stage and started to introduce their upcoming album (now available on ITunes) titled Ying Yang Forever. They started of their set with their new songs “She”, “That Girl is a Hoe”, and “Holla at a Bitch”. From there, the twins brought out some more well known and older songs, such as their hit “Shake”.

Around this time, people started to make their way into IV, having had their fill of rap for the night. The Ying Yang Twins continued to do their thing, while making sure to show the audience their appreciation by coming into the barricade and getting up close and personal with all the freshmen pressed against the front.

All in all, the Welcome Back concert was put on well by the Program Board, but the talent wasn’t what the students at UCSB expected or necessarily wanted. The Ying Yang Twins definitely put on a better show than Three 6 Mafia, but the next Welcome Back concert may want to stay away from rap groups and move towards more widely appreciated and loved music. Although the acts did their best to put on a good show, much of the audience lost interest quickly.
