How to Cure a Hangover

By Taylor Davis:

It’s a Saturday morning, and you can’t get out of bed. Your head is spinning and it feels like a small hydrogen bomb just went off, all the while your stomach protests any upright movement longer than half a minute. All you want to do is lie in bed and try and sleep the next horrifying eight hours of pain and discomfort away. However, there are things you can do to not only make these hangovers a tad bit less horrific, but to prevent them as well.

The first sure-fire way to prevent a hangover is to drink a glass of water per unit of alcohol that you consume while you’re drinking. Some of you, however, will be upset that you can’t get plastered as quickly with this technique, so try a less fun-ruining version. Before you collapse into your bed, drink at least 24 oz. of water. If, for some strange reason, you don’t have this much water, substitute with a sports drink rich in electrolytes. Then, grab a water bottle and drink it throughout the night. This will not only replenish your body after a severely dehydrating night, but will also ease you stomach by balancing out the acid from the alcohol.

Let’s say you forgot to drink the recommended water and decided sleep and a good throw-up session were a better idea of a hangover cure. The next morning you will feel like your stomach is eating you from the inside out. As soon as you get out of bed, have a glass or two of water, followed by any of the following drinks: black coffee with lemon juice, tomato juice, or peppermint tea.

When the consumption of solid food finally becomes a possibility, without gagging of course, try fruits, such as bananas and apples, or a few slices of bread. The bread will absorb any remaining alcohol in your stomach, making it easier to process in the intestines, while the fruits help calm your stomach and replenish nutrients.

Supplements are also effective in curing the hangover blues. Probiotics, which are concentrated active bacteria cultures, should be taken to help restore the natural balance of flora, or good bacteria, in your intestines. Although your first thought might be to reach for the nearest bottle of Advil or Tylenol, beware that these types of medications are known to cause kidney and liver damage, two organs in overdrive during the morning after a drinking binge.

If you find yourself without food, water, or pills, the quickest way to cure that hangover is to detox in the gym or on the trails. By exercising after drinking, your body is able to get rid of all of the toxins that you put into your body the night before. It also helps you sweat out some of the alcohol consumed, while creating a way for oxygen to reach your brain immediately through improved circulation.

However, sometimes moving, eating, and drinking are just too much for the post-party body. In that case, only two things will help you: sleep and time. Sleep away your pain, nausea, and blurred vision, and when you feel you can manage walking and moving around, head straight to the kitchen to try one of the above remedies. If all else fails, skip the extra ten shots of Popov next time.
