Recession Extends to UCSB Campus Jobs

By Zak Weinberg:

More students than ever are applying for work on campus, eagerly completing applications for residential, dining, and maintenance positions – a signal of the severity of the economic recession. Raul Marquez, head manager of Residential Services at Santa Catalina Dormitories, reports he’s received over 100 applications for housekeeping employment opportunities. In past years, he claims, he was lucky to get three or four. Alberto Salazar, head of grounds department, says due to the influx of students, “you either use your hours, or lose them, because there are other students waiting to fill the positions.”

Some students argue it’s difficult to find a job, claiming the only way to get work on campus is through the recommendation of current employees, or employers in other campus departments. However, according to Marquez, a bad recommendation from an another employer in any UCSB department bars a student from most on campus jobs.

3rd year English major Matt McConnell claims most departments won’t return his phone calls, or respond to his online applications. Working students suggest checking up on applications in person, because it provides employers a face and personality to compliment an application. Also, checking up often is the key to getting hired.

According to the office of residential life, the best place to apply for work is in dining, due to one of the highest turnover rates on campus.
