The Isla Vista Recreation & Park District mourns the loss of “Steady” Ed Headrick. He invented the Frisbee while working at Wham-O, and in the 1970’s he created the sport of disc golf. “Steady” Ed died on August 12, 2002, and his long time wish to be cremated and added to the plastic of new Frisbees so that he can continue flying forever, is being honored by his family.
He said, “When we die, we don’t go to purgatory. We just land on the roof and lay there.” “Steady” Ed Headrick designed the Isla Vista Frisbee Golf Course which was officially opened on January 31, 2000. The course begins in Sueño Orchard and ends in Estero Park. Each hole has a basket approximately 4’ high and 2.5’ in diameter, and is made of galvanized steel mounted on a galvanized post. Each hole has a sign instructing players on how best to play the hole and what the ideal “par” for the hole is.
P.D.G.A. Rules Prevail with the following local rules:
Tread lightly: Stay on paths and open areas.
Out of bounds: Your Frisbee is out of bounds when it leaves the course, as marked by the white stakes. Out of bounds throws are played where the Frisbee leaves the course. **When a Frisbee is thrown out of bounds, add 2 strokes to your score. When thrown out of bounds on hole 9, (into the children’s play area), add 5 strokes.
If your Frisbee lands in someone’s property, you must obtain permission before entering their property to get your Frisbee back. This includes Community Garden plots.
Respect the plants, birds, animals and people who live in the area. Take steps back or sideways before throwing to avoid standing in bushes or hitting trees with your next throw. The health of trees and bushes is of primary concern in this course.
Respect all course neighbors by playing quietly. Have a good time and help keep the course open and clean! Maps of the Isla Vista Frisbee Golf Course can be obtained from the Park District office at 961 Embarcadero Del Mar.
